About
Vasco Hexel is the Area Leader in Composition for Screen at the Royal College of Music. He is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Boston, and the Royal College of Music, London, where he later held the Lord and Lady Lurgan Junior Fellowship in Composition 2006-2008.
Vasco has composed scores for award-winning animations, short films, documentaries, TV idents (KanalD, Romania), and an independent feature film (The Sandpiper, USA 2007, dir. Claudia Carey). While he regularly composes concert works, Vasco has an affection for pop music and musical theatre and frequently works as a conductor, arranger, and producer. Recent and ongoing projects include composing production music for Universal Publishing (Berlin / London), and working with director / music producer Chris Cunningham on the recent Gucci Flora advert.
Vasco's research interests include practice-lead research into 'The Changing Morphology and Functions of the Leitmotif in Recent US Cinema' (he gave a paper on the subject at the University of Leeds' Film Music Conference. on 6 November 2009) as well as musical creativity and originality in a competitive and collaborative environment.
